Gareth is warned by night whispers to flee from his tiny mountain village of Dun Mare. The stolen egg of a dragon will pay his way, if he manages to live long enough to sell it. However there are forces against him far beyond his understanding. All he believes he knows about his life and home is false, but the egg of the black dragon is the key. Many believe black dragons do not exist or have gone extinct. Gareth finds himself alone in a strange world of tempest seas, flying dragons, and powerful foes vying for the mental powers he may possess, and for control of the egg. Telepathic teachers a secret sisterhood, and the king's armies willing to kill for a black dragon are only the beginning of Gareth's story.

I wasn't sure what this book would be like based on the title and short synopsis. Based on the title, I thought it may be a silly parody type book. That is not necessarily a bad thing (Nelson Chereta does that well with his Waldo Rabbit series I think). My preconception was wrong though, this book is a standard type fantasy. Without trying to provide too much in the way of spoilers, the protagonist is a village boy/young man that lives near a dragon and decides to try to steal the dragon's egg. Adventure follows as various forces try to capture him in his bid to escape the village and find a new life. The various players, world, and magic system are unique enough that this book didn't feel like a rehash of any other book I have read. I like the protagonist and the 'generally upbeat feel' of the book. The author does a good job of balancing dialogue, action, world building, and character development (I am not a fan of verbose authors that take 3 pages to describe a valley, this author doesn't do that). The story mainly follows the protagonist (which I think is a good thing, I think the multiple POV style is a little overdone nowadays).
This is book one of a series and the author has stated that book two is only months away. I originally read this book with kindle unlimited, but liked it enough that I bought it as well (as I imagine I will read it again). I am looking forward to the next book and to seeing where the author takes the story.

Wow! I know Leroy likes dragons, I do also. Now I have 2 stories to keep up with. Write faster... Thanks
This is a wonderful bookstores as was Clary's Dragon Clan series. They have all been very hard to put down. Can't wait for his next book.
I'm somewhat surprised by all the 5 star reviews. The book certainly is not a bad book, but it's not epic. It starts very slowly, not even really moving the story along until almost 35% through the book. After that we find young Gareth a befuddled fool who shows flashes of intellect beyond his age.
Even at the end of the book we are still left wondering just what the book was about, where it's headed and what Gareth has to look forward to. The book is overly long for the story it tells. There is quite a bit of "fluff" in the book and I found myself skipping the mundane world descriptions. And sadly the world building is very mundane. We really never get a feel for the world the characters live in.
Gareth, our protagonist is never clearly defined as a character. We don't understand what drives him or why he does the things he does. Every other character in the book is a cut out. No depth, no development, nothing.
It's not a bad book, but it was very bland.
This is the second book of his I've read and am loving the original storylines. Another great set of characters and a plot that keeps surprising me. I'll be reading book two all night.
I love dragon stories like this! That may seem strange since I am 53 years old but I do love books like this! I could not put it down. I read it straight to the end. I found it fascinating. I also loved the Dragon Riders of Pern books.
